Acts 1:9; 3:21
Presented on March 30, 2008, © Dr. Jack Parrott

I. The Disappearance of Jesus

  1. He goes to represent us before the Father. Seated at the right hand of the Father - Priesthood of Christ in heaven. See 1 Peter 3:22 and Hebrews 4:14
  2. He goes to release the Holy Spirit in fullness - Power of Christ in the world (Acts 1.8)
  3. As He goes, the angels speak of His return with the saints at the second coming of Christ - promise of Christ for eternity. See Acts 1.11, 3.21 and Luke 21:27
II. The Distraction of the disciples
  1. Focused too much on earth. (Question of a restored earthly kingdom)
  2. Focused too much on heaven. (Gazing into heaven
III. The Distribution of the church
  1. God has a purpose for His church, just as for people. The disappearance of Jesus into heaven is followed by the distribution of the church into the world. Jesus withdraws so that His church may become what He intended them to be.
  2. God provides the power necessary to do His work. dunamis is enabling power. We are given the power to proclaim the Good News. The coming of the Spirit in power and fullness is to enable the people of God to do the work assigned to us.
  3. The place of God's ministry is ever-expanding and changing.
IV. Summary
  1. Jesus has returned to heaven and intercedes for us.
  2. Jesus is coming to reign as king in the heavenly kingdom.
  3. The Holy Spirit is God's presence with us now. God has not abandoned us.
  4. As the people of God we are to keep our eyes on heaven while doing the work Jesus has given us to do on earth.
  5. Remember this: the same Jesus who went to heaven to prepare our eternal home is coming back to get us!
