Presented on February 17, 2008, © Dr. Jack Parrott

I. God wants us to RECEIVE Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord

  1. ...confess with our mouths (Rom 10:9)
    1. What does it mean to confess? "to embrace, body and soul" [Message]
    2. See Romans 10.16 and also Isaiah 53:2-3 -- we are to accept, obey, heed the gospel. [Message] "to see and hear and act"
  2. Just saying words (like some spiritual hocus-pocus) is not enough. We must repent and receive (accept/acknowledge/ declare) Jesus as your Savior and Lord (captain, boss, president)
  3. Receiving Jesus is my response to God's initiative--John 1:12-13
  4. Everyone who calls on Jesus can be saved (v13), but before they can call on the Lord they must believe.
II. Before we can receive Him we must BELIEVE the good news
  1. Believe in our hearts (Rom 10.9) the truth about Jesus: his birth, life, death, resurrection, return. see John 5:24
  2. Not everyone who hears believes (Rom 10:18)
  3. Salvation comes to those who believe. See 10:9
III. Before we can believe we must HEAR the good news
  1. God reveals himself to us through creation. (Rom 1:19-20)
  2. He reveals himself to us through His word (1 Th 2:13)
  3. He reveals himself to us through other people
  4. He reveals himself to us in the circumstances of our own lives
IV. Before we can hear we must BE TOLD the good news

  1. The point of this teaching is not only our need to hear, believe, and receive Christ Jesus, it is also that Christians have a responsibility to be witnesses of the change Jesus has made in our lives. We announce the good news.
  2. Four types of witnessing
    1. Presence Evangelism (mime witnessing)
    2. Proclamation Evangelism (mouth witnessing)
    3. Persuasion Evangelism (apologetics)
    4. Penetration Evangelism (missionary or apostolic)
V. Before we can share the good news we must BE SENT to tell the good news
  1. Jesus has called us, equipped us with the Holy Spirit, and sent us out to be his witnesses. (I John 15:16; Mark 16:15)
  2. We have a different kind of 'seeker service' (we are the ones who seek others in Jesus' name).
  3. God's beautiful people are those who tell others about Jesus
